Highland Coos

Scottish Highland Cattle (Scottish Highland Coos) are among the most beautiful looking of the cattle breeds. They are recognizable by their unique shaggy coats of wavy hair and striking horns. They are known for their gentle dispositions. There are records dating back to the 12thcentury and there is archeological evidence of the existence as far back as the 6thcentury. That makes them the oldest living breed of cattle in the world.

Greg and Becky Wood, of Britten-Wood Highlanders, started their herd of Scottish Highland cattle in 2002 with one bull and four cows.  Then and since, with the Lord’s blessings and guidance along the way, their increased herd has been used for volunteer attendances and donations where needed. Being “not just another pretty beef”, some of their highlanders are not just halter trained, but also farrier trained (for foot care), cinch broke (for saddle or driving gear), and reign trained (also for saddle or driving).

Not necessarily to promote the breed, but to share our Lord’s blessing of the temperament these animals are gifted with, they are also used as “mentoring tools” with kids and teens who visit at Britten-Wood.  There is no comparison of the self esteem and joy in a youngster while steering a highlander in its’ driving gear as they walk down the public (rural) road!  The un-seen value of this picture is the youngster’s growth in responsibility, accountability, and most of all, the value of commitment.

So- being invited to the NE Florida’s Scottish Games and Festival will be a special treat for the highlanders, “Sugar” and “Maggie”!!  See you there!!
