More About Scottish Dogs

The history of Scotland is replete with the interaction between man and dog. However, Scotland is unique in the history of Europe in that there were no toy dogs developed by the Scots. All the dogs bred in Scotland were working dogs to help people survive in the mostly harsh northern climate.

There are three distinct types of dogs that were developed in Scotland. They are crop protectors, livestock protectors, and hunters. The first type of Scottish dog is the crop protector developed to eradicate mice, rats, and other vermin from grain in the fields and grain stored for food and seed for the spring planting during the Scottish winter. These dogs are: Border Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Skye Terrier, and the West Highland White Terrier.

The second type of dog from Scotland is the group that was developed to protect livestock. These dogs were crucial to the survival of the Scots because cattle and sheep were essential as a source of meat and clothing, This group includes: Bearded Collie, Border Collie, Rough Collie, Smooth Collie, and Shetland Sheep Dog. The third type of Scotch dog is used for hunting game. These dogs include: Gordon Setter, Golden Retriever, and Scottish Deerhound. The Golden Retriever and the Gordon Setter were first developed for hunting fowl. The Scottish Deerhound was used for hunting game in the forests. Scottish Deerhounds were the exclusive property of the nobility.

After the Jacobite Rebellions of the eighteenth century, when the old nobility system of Scotland was virtually destroyed, the Scottish Deerhound was nearly lost to the world. The Northeast Florida Scottish Games & Festival began our Scottish Breed Dog Display in 2001. In 2008 we will show most of the fourteen breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club as Scottish breeds.

We are displaying more than 50 dogs and their owners will be happy to describe their dogs and answer questions. The dogs displayed are typical of their breeds and are being shown by animal rescue groups and breeders Highland Breed Dog Display. No adoptions or sales are allowed on the grounds.
